Redefining Society's Perceptions

Redefining Society's Perceptions (QCQ Transcreation)
Symbols in society can often harbor prejudices and stereotypes about groups of peoples and identities. Symbols and Icons by Ruben Pater explores these ideas in logos and street signs. One that particularly stood out to me was the disabled symbol, and the idea of inequality behind it. As depicted below, the icon of the wheelchair is presented as static and stagnant, unable to move and incapable of independence. It implies that all people with disabilities, despite the vast spectrum of disability, are in wheelchairs. In reality, a vast majority of disabled individuals do not require the usage of a wheelchair. Potential methods of improving this icon in society would be to depict mobility and the ability to be independent; a more inclusive image to encapsulate the spectrum and express care toward all different types of disabilities.
